What exactly is Holy Orders?
As children of God, we all share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ and have the opportunity to live out this baptismal priesthood in everything we do in our lives, strengthening and serving one another. Some within this community of faith, however, are called to serve in a unique way within the ordained, or ministerial, priesthood. It is through the Sacrament of Holy Orders that men are ordained to this ministy and vocation, joining the office of bishop, priest, or deacon. Each of these orders has a unique role within the Church, being called to serve God and uniquely imitate Jesus in His roles as priest, prophet, and king.
But what actually happens?
The Sacrament of Holy Orders takes place during a Mass, often referred to as a "Mass of Ordination." During this Mass, the congregation is given the opportunity to joyfully assent as these men are presented to be ordained. Then, through a series of symbolic actions and prayers, they are reminded of the role and vocation which they are about to undertake, being presented with items connected to their ministry, anointed with Sacred Chrism, and dressed in the proper liturgical garments. The climatic moments come in the laying on of hands by the bishop and the invocation of the Holy Spirit upon them within the Prayer of Ordination. Having been ordained and joined a new "holy order," they are then sent out following the completion of that Mass to perform their new ministry and serve God's people. It is a beautiful moment in which the Church has the opportunity to unite together in appreciation of its liturgy, its tradition, and those who are willing to dedicate themselves to the service of God.
